Airport Details for
Guiuan Airport / Calicoan
Guiuan airport in Eastern Samar has been recently refurbished (2009) and provides a vital link for the development of one of the best Philippine surfing destinations at Calicoan Island. Guiuan is famous for being the place where Ferdinand Magellan first set foot on the brilliant white sand beaches of the Philippine archipelago and where the first U.S. Pathfinders returned to the Philippines to eject Japanese forces during World War II. Guiuan airport, in its current location, was completed in December 1944 and operated as a United States Navy air station until it was handed over to the Philippine government after hostilities ceased in the Pacific theatre. Today Guiuan is poised to be invaded by beach lovers and those wishing to find one of the best Philippine surfing paradises along white sand beaches of Calicoan Island, where they can alternately go scuba diving, windsurfing, kayaking, trekking and go chasing waterfalls in the rain forest mountains of Samar. Calicoan Island is being developed to surpass the beauty and bounty of the Philippine surfing hotspot of Siargao and the white sand beaches of Boracay Island
