10th July 2009 - Cebu Pacific Air, PAL Express and Zest Air have rerouted their frequent daily flights to Boracay /Caticlan airport because the Philippines Air Transport Office have changed the safety regulations following a series of minor landing incidents at Boracay / Caticlan airport.

Tropical island resort paradise holiday makers travelling to Boracay Island will now fly to Kalibo airport instead.

Kalibo airport is about two hours by air conditioned bus from Boracay / Caticlan airport. The air conditioned bus service from Kalibo to Boracay / Caticlan will be paid for by the airlines.

Flying to Kalibo airport instead of Boracay / Caticlan airport will bring back memories for those who travelled to the island during the 1980s, when Boracay Island was still a virgin tropical island paradise, before Boracay / Caticlan airport was opened.

You can still fly direct to Boracay / Caticlan with SEAir.

Today at our local radio I've heared that the airport will be reopen at Sept. 2009.
Can anyone confirm?

I prior booked to this airport- now my flight is diverted to Kalibo.
At my leg home from Kalibo to Manila I only have on hour to change
the terminal. Is this enough????

We have asked the affected airlines and the airport in Caticlan to confirm the rumour that Boracay / Caticlan Airport will be reopened to all flights in September, 2009. We hope to receive some confirmations within today. Please return to this thread later today or tomorrow.

As for the question "I only have on hour to change the terminal". I assume you are asking about changing terminals 1, 2 and 3 within Manila international airport NAIA. One hour should be sufficient time to move between any of the three NAIA terminals. However, if you only have only one hour from a scheduled domestic flight arriving from Boracay at NAIA Terminal 3 before you are scheduled to depart on an international flight from NAIA Terminal 1 or 2 then it is very unlikely you will have time to make the connection - because of the check-in cut-off time and the security check procedures - I would recommend that you book an earlier departure from Boracay.

If you had intended a different question about time or distance between terminals at NAIA, please rephrase your question and we will answer.

Additional information about the reopening of Boracay / Caticlan airport to all flights:

Feedback from the airlines today confirms that the airlines want to return to Boracay / Caticlan airport, Department of Tourism (DoT) want flights to return to Boracay / Caticlan airport but neither wants can be addressed until the Air Transport Office approves the two-way landing and take-off for larger aircraft.

Reports in the daily press that the airport may be reopened to all flights in September, 2009, is a reflection of the combined will of the airlines affected and the DoT. Thus, it is highly likely that Boracay / Caticlan airport facility will be expanded rapidly to allow all aircraft to safely land and take off in both directions by September.

We will let you know through these pages just as soon as the safety issues have been resolved.

Discussions with airline sources in Manila yesterday confirmed that direct flights to Boracay Caticlan airport have resumed. Flying to Boracay now takes two hours less!
